Farmer's Marketing

Posted by dasfseegdse Sabtu, 28 September 2013 0 komentar

So on the reg' we've been frequenting the Blacksburg farmer's market. It's such a great little family outing and it always boosts Ike's self esteem because people are so curious about him. "What kind is he?" "You should enter him in a contest!" "His fur is so unique." I'm not gonna lie, it gets old but after being home by himself most of the week, we figure he deserves a little pick me up so we indulge him.

Of course, everything is local which I love! That's Blacksburg's mantra after all: "Buy local. Eat local. Be local."

That's my handsome bearded man up there, pickin' apples. Our usual haul includes: bread, apples, and veggies. We have our favorite little stands but we're looking into eventually getting some meat from some of the local farms. We shall see.

I only wish I had nothing to do on Wednesdays so that I could get fresh supplies twice a week.

But that could get expensive. You know how normally you feel really terrible after leaving the grocery store because you just spent a shit-ton of money?? Well you spend a lot of money at the Farmer's Market but you just feel better about it. You know where the money is going and it ain't to Kroger. It's to local farmers who rely on this for their livelihood and are proud of their products. I'm a believer!!!

P.S. Take your own bag or you might be judged. I learned that lesson the hard way.
Hope you got some yummy fixin's for dinner tonight at your farmer's market. Enjoy this crisp early fall Saturday!!

Hi Sunshine Bloggers! Kristyn from Milk + Crown here.

These days, I split my time between Tampa and St. Augustine, and today I'd love to share a bit of St. Augustine with you all for this week's City of Mine. Enjoy!

Tell us about St. Augustine
St. Augustine, FL is a tiny tourist city located on the coast of Northeast Florida near Jacksonville. Dubbed the oldest city in America, St. Augustine now boasts a variety of cultural, historical, and topographical attractions that draw people from around the world. It's been my off-and-on home for the past year, and I really enjoy the cute streets, proximity to the water and rich history of the area.

What is your favorite part about your city?
I love that St. Augustine is small enough to conquer on foot, but diverse enough to keep you interested. I love walking around and exploring the downtown area most. Because of its tourist vibe, St. Augustine is a great hub for supporting small businesses and boutiques.

Guest Feature: Classic Black Beans & Rice Recipe

Posted by dasfseegdse Jumat, 13 September 2013 0 komentar
Hi Friends! Happy Friday! I know we're moving away from our weekly Blogging 101 posts. While I'm in the process of moving my blog, I'm sharing the spotlight with the many members of Sunshine Bloggers. Today's post is our first foodie post from Idalmis of Second Chances Girl. Idalmis is a gorgeous mom who is bringing some of the Miami heat to the blog.I'm more than thrilled to have Idalmis as one of our guest features and I hope you enjoy her post and visit her blog! - Angel of Static-Romance

When you think of Miami, Fl, what things come to mind? Beaches, sunshine and surely, Will Smith! Who could forget his song “Welcome to Miami, Bienvenidos a Miami!” The video for that song gave a picturesque view of our beautiful city but there is more, so much more! I was born and raised in Miami and I agree that it is a tropical paradise within the US. It also is a big metropolitan city, growing more and more every day!

The largest ethnic population in Miami is Cubans.  Cubans have been emigrating from Cuba to Miami in masses since the 1950’s. Like all immigrants arriving in a new country, Cubans brought their culture and food to Miami. The most famous Cuban dish has to be black beans and rice, hands down. It is served at every Cuban restaurant and get-together. It’s our staple! The recipe is passed down from generation to generation and each family has their own twist. Want to try making black beans and fluffy white rice at home? Then today is your lucky day, below you will find recipes for both!

Classic Black Beans and Rice: (Serves 8)

Ingredients:
1lb dried black beans (soaked overnight)
1 large chopped onion
1 green bell pepper, chopped
1 spanish chorizo, diced
3 cloves of garlic, diced
½ tsp ground cumin
1 tbsp cooking wine
1 tbsp white vinegar
1 tsp granulated sugar
2 tbsp olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste
Boil beans in fresh water. The liquid should be about one to two inches above the top of the beans. Bring the beans to a boil and then reduce to a simmer, partially covering the pot. If any foam develops, you can skim it off during the simmering process. Black beans generally take about one and one-half hours to become tender.

Meanwhile, heat 1 tbsp oil in medium saucepan. Sauté onion, chorizo, pepper and garlic until onions are tender, about 10 minutes.  Add cooking wine, cumin and salt and pepper. Set aside. Once beans are tender, add onion mix to the beans, along with the vinegar and sugar. Bring the beans back to a boil and boil for 20 minutes.  Mash some of the beans to the side of the pot, to thicken the soup. Add 1 tbsp of oil, stir and turn off heat. Serve over white rice.

To make the white rice:
4 cups long-grain white rice
6 cups water
1 tbsp salt
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tbsp olive oil
Wash rice and drain. In a pot over high heat, combine all ingredients. When the rice starts boiling, reduce heat to medium and cook covered for about 20 minutes. Uncover and fluff with fork. Cover rice with a wet paper towel, cover, reduce heat to low and let cook for another 10 minutes. Reduce from heat and serve with beans.

I hope you enjoy this recipe. Of course, every family serves their meals differently so this can be served as a side dish, main dish, over brown rice, quinoa, whatever makes you happy. Black beans and rice is Cuban comfort food. I grew up on this meal and still eat it about once a week. If you ever get a chance to come down to Miami, please stop by a Cuban restaurant and try out this meal for yourself!

Guest Feature: Health & Fitness Tips for Bloggers

Posted by dasfseegdse Jumat, 06 September 2013 0 komentar
Happy Friday friends! Today's post is being brought to us by the lovely Linda of Tapas Lifestyle. I reached out to Linda to discuss health and fitness for bloggers because I think it's an important aspect that we can easily forget. Linda has great recommendations of how to stay fit in the central Florida area. Big thanks to Linda for putting this post together as it's extremely informative! Enjoy! - Angel

Where do you rank personal health and fitness in your life?  How often do you ask yourself, "How can I get everything I need to do, done in one day?"  Bloggers know the importance of scheduling, especially when we face constant deadlines for our projects.  I want to ask you, should not our health be at the top of our list of "most important projects"?  I wanted to share with you a few "Health & Fitness Tips for Bloggers" that has helped me in my journey of a healthier lifestyle.

I know how difficult it is to live a truly balanced life.  We have so many elements in our lives that are extremely important to us, such as family, spirituality, work, friends, health and so many other areas.  How can we formulate our day to make sure that we are taking care of the most important things first?  First we need to take care of ourselves, especially our health and well-being, and then we can take care of everything else. I hope that at least some of these tips inspire you to make positive changes in your life in regards to your health and fitness.

Health & Fitness Tips for Bloggers

There are several ways we can take care of our health and fitness.  We can begin our focus in the following three areas:
  1. Physical Exercises (Running, Swimming, Biking, Core/Strength Training)
  2. Mentally Intensive Exercises (Yoga, Meditation)
  3. Healthy Eating (Meal Preparation {link}, Food Selection)
Finding out what works best for YOU is key!  Ask questions such as:
  1. What type of exercises do I like?
  2. Do I enjoy working out alone, with a friend or do I need to participate in group exercises to keep me going?
  3. What time of day am I most receptive to exercise (up with the sun, mid-day, or are you a night owl)?
Come up with a reasonable plan and don't do too much in the beginning.  Start out slowly and as you progress with your routine, tweak it as necessary.  Once you've worked out the bugs and you feel that you are getting a good rhythm with your routine, go ahead and think about increasing your level/effort of exercising, if you want more of a challenge.

Once you have a regular fitness routine, try to set goals for yourself.  Start off by setting mini goals.  This will enable you to stick with your plans long term. That will in turn lead to even greater accomplishments.  For example, if in the back of your mind you want to eventually run a marathon, you have to start small.  Research running plans such as Couch to 5K, then work your way up to 10K, then a half marathon, and eventually a marathon.  Just know that every mini goal you accomplish leads to your ultimate goal.  No action is too small.  Just START!

It is very important to cover the basics when exercising, such as strength training, cardio and flexibility.  With that being said, I personally like to mix up my exercise routines at the gym.  Variety is the spice of life, right?  I am a member of a really great gym.  The gym has so many fitness classes such as spinning, core, strength training, yoga, Zumba..., great equipment and two swimming pools.  That helps keep my exercising at the gym interesting and challenging.

I appreciate belonging to such a great gym, but sometimes it's also nice to exercise in other ways.  We are so fortunate to live in Florida.  There are so many things to do outdoors.  I take full advantage of the trails around locally by biking, rollerblading and running.  I have listed a few trails locally below.

Central Florida Trails:

A view of the Seminole Wekiva Trail on my outdoor run.

It was great that we accomplished our 10-miler training run.  Seminole Wekiva Trail.

Another great source to help liven up your exercise routine is to check out Groupon and Living Social deals.  They offer so many different types of physical activities that you can try out for substantially reduced fees.
I personally have tried aerial silk classes and barre classes through Groupon and Living Social.  Below are the links and descriptions to the classes I took.  I absolutely loved them!

Orlando Aerial Arts - "classes are designed to increase Flexibility, Stamina and Core Strength.  No prior skill or fitness level is required!"

barre 54 (Winter Park, FL) - classes "offer a full body, cardiovascular workout using Lotte Berk barre method exercises fused with Pilates and yoga stretches, using a ballet barre.  Each 54-minute class features high-energy music and a mix of isometric exercises and orthopedic stretches that challenges every muscle in the body, creating long, lean, supple muscles and strong, sculpted physiques."

Below is another offer that seems like a really fun idea!

Allure Dance Studio (Orlando, FL & Ocoee, FL) - classes "offer a wide variety of classes that allow you to feel confident, healthy, sexy and empowered all at the same time.  These classes change the definition of fitness, from unenjoyable routine, to fun!  These classes are both on and off the pole, and are developed entirely around making you comfortable with your body."

Get your creative juices flowing!!!  Start a meetup for local bloggers once a month or more at a time that works for everyone, and do something healthy and fun!

Traveling is also a good time to try new things, especially true for incorporating exercise into your trip.  Last month my boyfriend and went down to St. Petersburg, FL for an extended weekend trip.  As we were thinking about what we wanted to do on this trip, I thought about my long time desire to try stand up paddleboarding (SUP).  We did a little research and found NinjaFit Paddleboarding Co.  Cory, the paddleboarding instructor, was very professional and fun!  Not only was it 90 minutes of great core exercises but it also targeted those little muscles everywhere that are sometimes unintentionally neglected.  The ocean setting was phenomenal.  It was so relaxing.  We had a great time!  It is a beautiful and renewing way to exercise.  It's really nice to try new forms of exercise to rejuvenate your mind and body.

In addition to exercising, an important key element to maintaining a healthy lifestyle is meal preparation and food selection.  In other words, it just doesn't happen by chance.  In my journey to be healthier, the concept of “What should I eat on a regular basis?” came up.  Since my boyfriend and I have started this journey, we have spent a good amount of time planning out healthy meals.  Test out many recipes so that you can have enough options you can pick from so that you don't get tired of the same thing.  We ran into this and we went back to the drawing board to add more recipes to our repertoire.  Once you get enough recipes the you just have to make the time to prepare them.  We use Sundays as our meal prep day to prepare food for the both of us for the week ahead.  This has really proven helpful in maintaining a healthy eating routine.

All in all, the main message I would like this post to present to you is that your health is a vital key to enjoying your life.  Take the time to plan your workouts and to plan your meals.  Doing the majority of the planning upfront really helps in executing your goals!

Cheers and good health to you!
